Spellbreaker Cubes

Back to Java Applets

This game is modeled off one of the final puzzles in a classic text adventure called Spellbreaker. It is a variation of a puzzle where you must find a counterfeit coin using a scale.

There are twelve cubes. All of them are magic. However, the magical power level of one cube is different from the others. You have a limited amount of time to identify the correct cube.

You have two spells available: Jindak and Blorple. The Jindak spell will detect the magic level of different spots in the room. When you have identified the correct cube, you should use the Blorple spell to transport to another place. If you choose incorrectly then you will be trapped. Use the gray spots as "scales" to stack your cubes. Obviously if you do not put an equal number on each stack, the side with more cubes will have more magic.

You are limited to casting Jindak three times before the security nymph appears. Once this happens, you are only allowed to cast Blorple, which will end the game. There is no limit to how much time you may spend rearranging the piles.

Remember that the unique cube might not be more magical than the others. It might be less magical. This is a detail that has tricked many players of the original game, causing most walkthroughs to be wrong. If you try to solve the puzzle under the assumption that the unique cube is the most magical, you have a 50/50 chance that it will be impossible to solve.

There is a definitely a solution that will identify the unique cube in all cases, but it is more complicated than the "find the most magical" solution.
